Along Milwaukee

December 19, 2015

Along Milwaukee at a stoplight
I saw a woman reading, leaning
out her window, above the kabob shop,
tapping her cigarette ash into a cup
on the ledge.
She didn’t look up as we rode along.

Train reflections gleam in the buildings as it passes
by overhead along its route
at night – cities are just as busy
with pockets of quiet
along the way

zipping along – over the river
over the bridge –
past the water tower
past the tribune

I hold tighter
my soul leaning in
for the briefest of heartbeats
and the night is alive around me
summer clinging on
lingering still
