The last of October

November 1, 2014

The last of October fades into the dark
The streets run to quiet now as
the final rounds of the goblins and superheroes, dragons and princesses
march away to bedtimes.
Snowflakes melt onto fallen leaves,
puddles collecting along the sidewalk
– still flashes of red and yellow, bundled together
in the soggy grass and trash collected along the street.
moldering slowly into the earth – the turning of time
and the slow descent
into winter slumber
October’s breath will turn to November chill and with it, the open door to winter
draws nearer even so,
but for now, the lights on the Halloween houses
still shine through the jack-o-lanterns,
there’s still candy at the door
another night more, another story
in the dark before it goes.
