Sleep, Arthur

Sleep, Arthur

Golden dreams wreathe your slumbering head

I count the long hours one by one

As they pass, in slow progression

With me, sitting still beside your bed

Your shroud, your tomb, your grave,

All these names for the earth that holds you

It’s a waiting room – a doorway

A resting place – a quiet cave

It is peaceful here, as they said, and the days are gray

The air is still, and soft at night

The stars reach for miles in the dark

And I watch them for here I stay

I said I would not go, and it was true

I’ll wait, watching the stars dance slowly on

The stars know, as does the moon, the sun,

I said I’d wait – I’ll wait for you
